ARQUETOPIA

Arquetopia is an artist residency program located in Puebla City, Mexico. Illustrations completed under mentors Francisco Guevara & Nayeli Lopez. I stayed a month immersed in the culture and studied various forms of Catholic art, with a focus on the nuns that influenced food and culture in the city.

The themes I focused on for this series were on childhood trauma. I wanted to connect to myself on this trip and the art that was made. I have always had an interest in Catholic art and the impact it's had in the Americas. With significant Spanish ancestry and indigenous I was always conflicted with the idea of an entity controlling how women feel and see themselves. I studied the great cathedral in the center of Puebla inside and out, as well as visit the many small chapels within the city. Additionally I began to focus my studies on the nuns that had a huge impact on cuisine and many other things that progressed the city. I found myself connecting to these women who found some sort of independence within their own confinement.
